Castella had changed.
He had been a man, and then he had died to become something else, something different. Whatever that thing was, it was no longer as much like the original Castella as it had been in the beginning.
It was the killing that had changed it.
At first, Castella had been driven simply by the need for revenge. Killing the dog had merely whetted his appetite for blood, an appetite that increased with each individual death.
It was almost as if his own spirit were strengthened by the deaths of others.
They did not have his power or know his secret, and their own deaths were not like his. They did not linger to contest with him. They passed mildly away, leaving no trace of themselves behind.
They lacked his motives and his magic, and he now saw that he could prolong his quasi-life forever, killing anyone he chose and feeding on the pleasure of their death.
He still wanted to kill Hamner.
He still wanted to torture him with the death of the grandson.
He was now convinced that those were the deaths that would free him from his limitations, allow him to flee the junkyard and go out into the wider world, with its promise of numberless prey and infinite delight.
Therefore the deaths of Hamner and his grandson would be especially sweet, and now that Hamner was in the junkyard, Castella planned to keep him there until Hamner had seen death's naked face.
